Travis’s Story

“I was told I couldn’t succeed in the outside world.”
~ Travis, Westshore Apartments resident

As a child, Travis lived in several different foster homes.  Those years were extremely difficult for him. He could never count on one place for more than a few years, and was permanently separated from his family. “I went through my whole life feeling like I was alone.” says Travis “I was told I couldn’t succeed in the outside world.”

Travis resolved to make a better life for himself despite these obstacles. He committed himself to school and music. “I had nothing to lose,” he says, “It gave me strength.”

At age 18 Travis was dropped off on the streets of Portland, no longer a responsibility of the state, and newly homeless. With help from New Avenues for Youth, Travis got his GED, a job, and lived in transitional housing.

But Travis knew he’d need a more permanent solution.  With the help of his caseworker, he found REACH and the Westshore Apartments. Travis now has a stable foundation to build the rest of his life. His journey was made possible with his determination and courage, along with a continuum of support provided by local organizations.

Travis was hired as the Westshore’s building monitor. He is gaining valuable job experience on his path to independence. We are proud to have him has a resident and as a member of our team.
